The Highline
- Park in the Sky
Surrounded by iconic red brick buildings, Gehry's glass tower, and the charm of Chelsea, The Highline is a unique structural park, fast becoming one of New York City's most visited recreational areas. It is built on an elevated 1930's freight rail line, which runs from Gansevoort Street to 34th Street. The rail was originally built to deliver food and manufactured goods to the upper level loading docks of factories and warehouses. The rail line, which is now non-operational, last ran in 1980. In 1999 residents fought to prevent the demolition of this historical structure, which lead to "The Highline" as we know it today. Walking through the Park, you can take in the skeletal rails that capture a brief taste of the "Old Industrial NY". The landscape architects of the park, remained true to it's natural setting, allowing for grasslands, woodlands and open squares. The park also offers sundecks, water features, public art, and concessionaires. There's no doubt, that its beauty lies in the preservation of the organic structure.
This raised park oversees some of New York City's trendiest neighborhoods. It begins at Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District, known for its restaurants, fashion boutiques and nightlife. In the past decade this district has become one of NYC's notable neighborhoods. The majority of this 1.5 mile park runs above West Chelsea. This neighborhood has the world's largest concentration of art galleries, yet still remains mostly residential with beautiful tree lined streets. The northern most section the Highline, is located above a developing neighborhood known as Clinton/Hells Kitchen. It's expected that within the next 10 years this neighborhood will undergo many large-scale developments and improvements in its infrastructure. The Highline has many entry areas; giving visitors easy access and an opportunity to easily explore its surrounding neighborhoods.
Away from the traffic and well known bustle of the city's streets, this natural park is a relaxing way to explore the history and skyline of the worlds most recognized city. The High Line, which opened to the public on June 9, 2009, is quickly becoming a great way to spend a day in New York City.
